Fibreglass vs Steel Front Doors

If you’ve decided that it’s time to purchase a new front door, you may be wondering whether it’s better to purchase a fibreglass or steel door. In this blog, we review two of the most popular choices for front entry doors: Steel and fibreglass. Both options are great, durable choices. In this blog we cover fibreglass vs steel front doors, the benefits and points of difference of each to help you make the most informed decision.

Fibreglass Front Doors

Fibreglass doors are a very popular choice with homeowners because they are very durable and require little maintenance. They can be engineered to look just like real wood, which also makes it very versatile and attractive.

Fibreglass doors are also quite energy efficient — offering up to 4 times the insulation of real wood.

Because of these benefits of fibreglass doors, they tend to come with a higher price tag than steel— albeit a worthwhile investment for most homeowners who want an alternative to wood.

Steel Front Doors

Steel is also a great choice for an entry door. This option is available in many modern designs, but it’s not available in a woodgrain finish. Steel has been around for much longer than fibreglass, making it a popular choice for many people.

The Bottom Line

Both steel and fibreglass doors offer many benefits and are customizable. Either choice can be installed with a transom or sidelites, if your home allows, and can greatly increase your home’s curb appeal.

Steel is ideal for anyone on a budget. Fibreglass is a recommended choice for homeowners that want the look of real wood with added durability and low maintenance.

Both doors are very secure and can include a multi-point locking system for added protection and peace of mind.

At George Kent Home Improvements, all of our doors are backed by a lifetime warranty that covers workmanship.

Hello. First, I offer my sincere condolences to Mr. Kent’s family and friends. His lovely obituary appeared the Star a few weeks ago and I recognized his name. He truly left a legacy of love, which is all that matters in this world.

Second, your email arrived in our inbox and got my attention. Does the fiberglass front door stand up to scratching by an anxious dog? Our current wooden door receives occasional touch ups by us, with various products.

Thank you for your time and you have my sympathy in your loss of Mr. Kent.

Hi Julie, thanks so much for the kind words about Mr. Kent! We are really glad to hear that he had an impact on you, just as he did on us. We’ll pass the message on to his family.

As for your fiberglass door, this is likely to depend on a number of factors (i.e. type of dog, model of door, etc.). If you’re interested, we’d suggest getting in touch with our team directly by calling us 416-324-2816 and we can propose some potential options.

      Best,
      The George Kent Team
