Seeing Condensation on Interior Windows? Why You Should be Concerned

Window condensation is more than just a nuisance you need to deal with during colder months. These drops of water can be a sign that your home is sustaining damage, especially if you are living in an older residence. The condensation can rot wood moulding and cause damage to plaster. If you see condensation on interior windows, you should be concerned.

What is Condensation?

Condensation forms when a substance passes from a lighter to a denser physical state. In the example of your window, it is passing from a gas to a liquid. Since condensation is caused by too much humidity in the air, it indicates a more serious problem – excess moisture in your home’s interior environment.

Where Does Condensation Form?

You will see condensation form over the lower part of your window because the temperature of the glass is not uniform from the top to the bottom. The temperature is lower at the bottom than at the top, which means you are likely to see the condensation there first. Windows which have a metal sash usually have more severe problems at the base and sides

The condensation can occur on cold spots, such as in corners of outside walls and in closets, where insulation value is reduced.

How to Deal with Condensation on Interior Windows

  • Reduce humidity in your home by turning down the humidifier so that it releases less moisture into the air.
  • Move plants away from your windows. They release moisture into the air, and if you have a number of them close to your windows, it will only compound the problem of condensation. Moving them elsewhere can help you reduce the condensation issue immensely.
  • Run your kitchen and bathroom fans every time you cook a meal or use the shower. Make a point of running them for 15 or 20 minutes after you finish preparing food or showering to allow moisture in the air to escape.
  • Open a window for a short time. During warmer days, open your window to allow some moisture to escape from your home.
