How Do You Know When It’s Time to Replace Insulation?

Everyone in colder climates knows how important having insulation is to keep a house at a comfortable temperature all year round, without sending your heating bill through the roof.

However, some people are not aware that simply having insulation is not a guarantee that it is going to do a good job retaining a high level of heat and give transfer resistance. Like most products, insulation is susceptible to both time and harsh conditions, and sooner or later it becomes less reliable.

The issue arises when homeowners do not realize that their insulation is in need of replacement, and so they just continue throwing money out the window.

In an effort to help you save a few dollars, we have comprised this guide to help you figure out if it’s time to replace your insulation or not.

Cover the Attic

It should not come as a shock that you lose a lot of heat out of the top of your home. After all, hot air rises.

A good way to check if your insulation is in need of replacement is to examine the attic floor. If you are able to see any floor joints, cracks, or gaps in any part of the floor – then you need to put down some new insulation. Otherwise, the heat is just going to leak through those areas and dissipate out of the house much faster than it should.

Look for Ice

Oddly enough, you may be able to find signs that your insulation is in need of replacement by checking the outside of the home. If your insulation is doing its job properly then it should be repelling the cold away from your house by keeping both the inside and outside nice and warm.

Once you see signs of ice gathering on your house more than it normally does, or far more than any of your neighbor’s houses, then it is likely a sign that your insulation is in need of replacement.

Rising Heat Cost

This is probably the most obvious indicator that something is wrong with your insulation. If you keep your house at a steady temperature throughout the winter season, but your heating bill has been climbing higher, then it is a sign that your insulation is quickly failing and in need of replacement.
