Advantages of Laminated Shingles

Laminated shingles are a type of asphalt roofing shingle. They have become more popular in recent years among homeowners, but are made from the same components as 3-tab shingles. Before you make a decision about the best type for your home, you should know about the advantages of laminated shingles.

Difference Between Laminated Shingles and 3-Tab Shingles

Two decades ago, 3-tab shingles were the industry standard and were used for most residential roofing jobs. They are still used today and the product has not changed very much. A 1-Ft. tall X 3-Ft. wide shingle slab is cut in a way that it has slots at one end that creates three slabs. Each one is about five in. tall X 12 in. wide.

A laminated shingle has an extra layer under its lower half. This makes its tabs twice as thick as they would be otherwise.

Advantages of Laminated Shingles

  • More Natural and Deeper Look

Laminated shingles create depth by featuring tabs of different widths separated by large, randomly spaced gaps. The spaces highlight the thickness of the tabs to create the visually appealing effect of depth on the roof.

  • More Durable than 3-Tab Shingles

Heavier construction means that laminated shingles will last longer than their 3-tab counterparts. They are constructed with more asphalt, granules and fibreglass per square foot to provide superior protection from the sun, heat, impact and water damage. Choosing this style means you will get longer warranty times and higher wind ratings than with 3-tab shingles.
