How To Qualify for the $5,000 Canada Greener Homes Grant

On May 27, the government of Canada launched a $2.8 billion retrofit program called the Canada Greener Homes Grant. This grant will pay homeowners up to $5,000 to make their home more energy-efficient.

Below are details of how you can qualify for the $5000 Canada Greener Homes Grant and how you can work with George Kent Home Improvements to capitalize on the savings.

What is the purpose of the grant?

The purpose of the Canada Greener Homes Grant is to lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Emissions from Canadian homes account for 18% of our nation’s total output and this grant will begin to help decrease that number as we aim to hit other, broader environmental objectives.

“As a country, every effort counts to keep our air clean and our environment healthy,” said Justin Trudeau. “We know that these retrofits can sometimes be out of reach, so our government is now making them more affordable for Canadians.”

How many Greener Homes grants are available?

The government will provide up to 700,000 grants of up to $5000 to help homeowners make energy-efficient retrofits to their homes, such as better insulation, doors, and windows.

What else is in the program?

There are two additional elements to this program:

  1. EnerGuide evaluations & expert advice: These consultations are worth up to $600 and can help homeowners begin to plan their retrofits.
  2. Recruitment & training of EnerGuide advisors: In order to meet the demand for these advisors, the government will invest in their training across the country.

How do I qualify for the Canada Greener Homes Grant?

If you visit the NRCan website, you’ll find a step-by-step breakdown of how to successfully apply for this grant.

Step 1: Familiarize yourself with the initiative

Make sure you are eligible for the grant by reviewing the requirements and learning more about the process.

Step 2: Register and book your EnerGuide evaluation

To receive one of the 700,000 grants, you must register via the Greener Homes Grant portal. Once that’s completed, an NRCan registered energy advisor (EnerGuide advisors) will evaluate your home and prepare you for qualifying for the retrofits.

Step 3: Plan, document, and complete your retrofits

Review the recommendations made by the EnerGuide advisor and decide what retrofits would be best for your home based on your budget. To qualify, at least one retrofit must be both eligible and recommended by the advisor.

Step 4: Book your post-retrofit evaluation

Once you have worked with the George Kent team to complete your retrofit, a post-retrofit evaluation will need to be completed and all the required documents should be submitted online or by mail.

Step 5: Receive your grant

Confirm your grant total in the portal and receive your cheque.
