Canada Greener Homes Grant: Upgrade Your Home!

The Government of Canada wants to help Canadians make their homes more energy-efficient.

Through the Canada Greener Homes Grant, you can make energy-efficient retrofits to your home and receive a grant of up to $5,600! Read on for everything you need to know about this money-saving initiative to upgrade your home.

How The Grant Process Works

Homeowners may be eligible for up to $600 for the cost of pre-and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluations and for up to $5,000 for eligible retrofits such as home insulation, windows, doors, and air sealing.

1. Who Is Eligible?

First, you must determine your eligibility based on the criteria on the Government of Canada website. The requirements are straightforward and most homeowners can apply, as long as you are not living in a newly-built home. You can use this checklist to find out which property types are eligible and the documents you must submit in order to apply.

2. Register and Book an Evaluation

Once you are registered, you will need to book two EnerGuide evaluations. A pre-and post-retrofit evaluation. These will be completed by NRCan registered energy advisors.

The purpose of the pre-retrofit evaluation is to provide you with expert advice on which retrofits are recommended for your home. You will receive a post-retrofit evaluation after the work has been completed. This will provide a measure of the improvements from an energy-saving and environmental standpoint.

What Home Retrofits Are Eligible For The Grant?

  1. Home Insulation
  2. Air-Sealing
  3. Windows and Doors
  4. Thermostats — must be combined with other retrofits
  5. Space and water heating
  6. Renewable Energy
  7. Resiliency Measures — this can include roofing membranes, waterproofing your foundation, moisture-proofing crawl spaces, walls, and headers
