Do you know your window styles? If you are going to buy this type of product, you need to be familiar with the different styles on the market. Here is the rundown of Window Styles 101:

List of Different Window Styles

  • Casement Windows

Casement windows swing open out (either to the right or the left) and are very watertight. They can force more air into your home, since the open window acts like a chute to pull air inside. The screen is on the inside, which makes it easy to remove for cleaning, but may not be the best choice if you have young children or pets who may lean against it when the window is wide open.

  • Awning Window

Awning windows open horizontally. When they are open, they provide a protective cover for the open window. If you are looking for a window that you can leave open during light rain showers, the awning window is a good choice. This style doesn’t allow a lot of airflow to enter the house, though.

  • Double Hung Window

Double hung windows have a top and a bottom sash. They are a popular choice with homeowners because they can be easily cleaned. This style is also easy to repair.

  • Single Hung Window

A single-hung window has two sashes. There is one on top that stays stationary and one on the bottom that moves vertically. An advantage to choosing this style is that it limits air intrusion, since there are fewer seams that must be sealed.

  • Sliding Window

Sliding windows work by having two sashes that move to the side. The screen covers the entire glass area. Both sashes tilt into the room for cleaning and maintenance.

  • Single Tilt Slider Window

A single tilt slider is made up of one stationary sash and another sash which can move from side to side. It can tilt into the room for cleaning and maintenance purposes.
