How to Choose the Right Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is a popular choice for today’s homeowners due to its low maintenance and high durability. If you want to have your summer weekends free from having to scrape and reapply paint every few years, then you are doing the right thing by looking at vinyl. Now that you have decided on a material, you’ll want to choose the right vinyl siding for your home.

How to Choose the Right Vinyl Siding

There are a number of factors to consider when you are looking at vinyl siding. This product is available in clapboard, shake, as well as styles that look similar to stone, brick or log siding.

Most vinyl siding products are manufactured to resemble wooden siding. You have probably seen clapboard, or lap siding on other homes in your neighbourhood. This type of siding is offered in a number of lengths and heights.

Lap Siding

Lap siding can be purchased in single, double or triple “courses.” The courses are the rows that look like wooden boards in each piece of vinyl siding.

When you are considering vinyl siding, keep in mind that the length of the siding will affect the number of seams that are visible on your house. Siding is typically sold in 12-foot lengths. You can also buy it in 16 and 20-foot lengths. Before you decide to purchase a 20-foot bundle of siding, keep in mind that the longer the piece of siding, the more flexible it will be.

Better quality siding is thicker and is designed with larger flanges and nailing hems; these features give it more rigidity. An experienced vinyl siding contractor has the skills to avoid waviness when working with long pieces of siding.

Polymer Shakes Siding

You can get the look of wood shakes in a number of styles by choosing polymer vinyl siding. This type of vinyl siding is moulded from polypropylene resin in a different process than the one used to make clapboard vinyl pieces. The siding is thicker than the clapboard style available on the market.

If you want to get a look for your home that appears more like real wood, this would be the way to go. It’s the best choice for older homes or ones that have a particular architectural style that you wish to maintain, such as Queen Anne, Georgian, Victorian, etc.
