Common Insulation Installation Mistakes

Did you know that improper installation significantly affects the energy performance as well as the comfort of a home? Here are the 5 areas in the home where poor insulation can compromise energy performance:

#01. WINDOWS, DOORS, AND ROUGH OPENINGS

Doors, windows, and rough openings that have improper sealing can create moisture and comfort problems, and can also contribute to higher energy bills. Properly sealing these areas, however, can definitely be cost-effective. This is why contractors should be very careful when sealing all penetrations, but the truth is, these are the areas wherein most problems can be seen most of the time.

#02. PLATE PENETRATIONS AND CHASES

In terms of air sealing, not all areas within homes contribute to air leakage. For instance, the top plate in an attic drywall is one of the areas that have a great potential to lose air. Air sealing plates and chases can dramatically reduce leakage within a home and they will help contribute to better comfort and energy performance.

#03. AIR BARRIERS AROUND TUBS, SHOWERS AND DOUBLE WALLS

Tubs and shower inserts are sometimes installed even before the insulation goes in. Because of this, missing or improperly installed air barriers are not uncommon. An air barrier and continuous insulation can help prevent air leakage and moisture areas in these areas, but only if it is installed properly.

#04. DRYWALL

The lack of air or improper sealing of the drywall to your home’s top plates at attic or wall interfaces will let air leak. This is why contractors should install the caulk, gasket or sealant to the face of the top plate then install the drywall. The sealant or gasket should also remain intact during the installation of the drywall. It is important to note that there are specific compliances to meet, too.

#05. MISALIGNED INSULATION

Misalignment of insulation happens when the insulation is not significantly in contact with the air barrier. Insulation and an air barrier should be in substantial contact. If not, insulation misalignment will take place.

This is why it is important to only work with contractors that are licensed, experienced and reliable. It is important to ensure that the insulation materials used are the proper ones, and at the same time, the installation itself should be done properly.
